Herberger TheatreThe Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow
Friendly faces and a fantastic play were the highlights of NAAAP-Phoenix's recent outing to the Herberger Theatre. The group packed the upper balcony of the downtown Phoenix playhouse for a Friday-night performance of "The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow."

More than 50 members and friends of NAAAP came out for the event on Nov. 10. The turnout was a great success, especially considering it was the first of the organization's cultural outings, according to Jason Wong, one of the group's vice presidents.

The Actors Theatre play featured a story about an adoptee who has issues with her South Californian mother, her Chinese biological mother, plus a few nervous ticks thrown in. The production was the Arizona premiere of the script written by Rolin Jones.

Asian American Melody Butiu stars as Jennifer Marcus, a sassy 22-year-old genius and computer wiz who overcomes her gripping personal hang-ups by building a robot (Jenny Chow) to fly to China to find her biological mother. Jennifer's in-home and on-line interactions with a whacky group of side characters were especially good because they shape a story that's profoundly funny and touching at the same time.

Add in an audience full of new NAAAP friends, and "The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow" made for a great evening.
