Adopt A Family The
Luera family spent Christmas
with presents under the tree thanks to some generous NAAAP
members. Piles of gifts - mostly toys, blankets, towels and
gift certificates - greeted the Guadalupe
family of seven, including three children, one Saturday morning
in early December.
After receiving the presents, Papa Luera
promised he'd return the kindness when he finishes his degree
in justice studies from Arizona State University
and pursues a career in human services.
About a dozen members gathered at the Kyrene School
District's Family Resource Center in Tempe
to present the donations to the family at NAAAP's first-ever
Adopt-a-Family event.
One of the younger Luera boys clutched his gift-wrapped present
all the way to the family's car as they loaded their presents
with the help of NAAAP President Ken Abaca
and other members before the Lueras headed home. Moments earlier,
his older brother and sister, who opened only one gift each
because they saved the rest for Christmas, unwrapped their
new clothes at the event while the younger Luera boy played
with a new toy car.
A total of 18 NAAAP members, including some who couldn't attend,
donated the presents. The Luera family also received gift
certificates from Bashas' and Fry's
Food & Drug, said Khonnie Silivongxay,
a NAAAP member, who coordinated the event and wrote letters
to the grocery stores asking for donations. NAAAP also collected
presents for a Chandler family who were unable
to make the event.
Irene Hsiao is a member
of NAAAP and a Master of Public Administration student at
ASU.
