Catch a Ball Game with
NAAAP- Phoenix
Although I've never been to any professional sporting events around
town, I was thrilled when NAAAP member, Elissa
Nago, invited me to attend an Arizona Diamondbacks
game. As soon as we arrived, I could feel the excitement and enthusiasm
of the crowd growing with anticipation as the game commenced that
evening at Chase Field. I quickly observed that
America's favorite pastime was no longer limited
to hotdogs, peanuts, and beer…here one can experience everything
from sushi to Mexican food and
even frozen margaritas! Their willingness to cater to the diverse
public palate denotes that cultural awareness is definitely on
their agenda.
Amongst the sea of spectators, we scurried to our seats with food
and drinks in tow. With a great view of the outfield, we involved
ourselves in cheering on the home team and jeering the other side
and I instantly became an enthusiast. If such an event can bring
the community together regardless of age, ethnic background and
cultural differences (with the exception of the hardcore Cubby
aficionado, of course), how can we embrace that concept in our
everyday lives? It begins with social and cultural awareness within
our own affiliations. I am considering joining NAAAP because I
believe in the purpose the organization serves when it comes to
helping its members develop both personally and professionally
while focusing on building community awareness.
In addition to individual
growth, one can engage in positive and enduring relationships
with other like-minded professionals that encourage support. The
approach that NAAAP seems to promote fully encompasses the personal
betterment of individuals, so that they become more proficient
in their chosen career paths. The willingness to educate, support,
and encourage Asian Americans enables them to
become productive members of the community.
By getting involved with the community, I understand that NAAAP
has made many charitable contributions and participated in volunteerism.
I believe that is a great way to engage with other local organizations
working for a common purpose. Giving back to the neighborhoods
we work and live in builds unity as we work alongside others who
believe in the greater good. Offering assistance to those in need
brings people together despite their differences. We are comprised
of many cultures and we should embrace those differences with
all their unique tendencies.
Helping
to perpetuate Asian/Pacific islander awareness
allows easier integration of diversity. There is a sociological
need for understanding the diverse population where we work, live,
and play. As mentioned in your mission, it is invaluable when
employers can address the needs of the Asian American workforce
by getting involved with the programs available to them. In our
very own neighborhoods, they sometimes sponsor events that involve
a multicultural theme. By actively participating, we are more
apt to appreciate and celebrate the colorful collage we represent.
I grew up in Hawaii, where the population of
Asian Americans is quite prevalent. It has taught me to embody
and respect ideals other than my own. To bring forth the many
representations that exist and know how each makes us unique in
our own right is a beautiful thing. NAAAP continues to exemplify
the basis of how professional Asian Americans, like me, can benefit
from everything the organization has to offer by serving the community
as a whole.
