Citrus Picking It was a cold morning but NAAAP members
were able to make it out and pick oranges for a local food bank
this past January 20, 2007 Although inclement weather threatened
the event, event coordinator, Khonnie Silivongxay
waited patiently watching the forecast for rain before giving
the event a final go. Fortunately, Mother Nature was kind, and
about 20 members gathered early on a Saturday morning to pick
citrus fruits at a residence in Mesa.
Layered under warm fleece, gloves and hats, members used long handled citrus gathering tools to maneuver around and pick oranges in difficult to reach upper branches. Other members were able to stay closer to earth and pick while standing or on tip toes. Some members were even tempted to climb the trees!
In all, about 200 pounds of oranges were picked and donated
to United Food Bank, a food bank serving the
Mesa area.
"It feels good to get out there and do something that benefits
the community," said NAAAP member Mary Ann Thirakul.
